About Our Equipment
We had already bought our old Farmall H tractor before we found out we could grow our own fuel for it. Apparently the older tractors will all run on straight alcohol. It requires a little adjusting but it runs smooth and has good power on E85. We only switch it to E45 winters for better starting in the cold.
We have a Ford truck and didn't modify it before dumping a tankful of E85 in. The "check engine" lights comes on/off at will but nothing else has changed. The manual says it won't run on ethanol without modifications but it does. I wouldn't try this on an engine that doesn't have a carberator but Brian figured - what the heck he'd give it a try.
The snowmobiles run on E85 too. They occationally need a squirt of ether but once the engines warm up they haven't had a problem.
The chainsaws do NOT run on E85 and the other small engines we have seem to not be able to warm enough to keep things running (maybe they need a cogeneration heating fuel line?) but all the John Deere lawn tractors do well on E85 as does the goldcart we use to zip around the farm.
